How to light your fire

Here is some advice on how to light a fire quickly and safely

1. Prepare your room and appliance

To burn, a fire needs oxygen. Open to maximum capacity the airflow valve on the appliance. We also advise you to aerate the room for a few minutes before lighting the fire.

If your appliance is too cold, the air risks being pushed towards the room instead of being aspirated by the chimney. If necessary, warm up your appliance by burning a little newspaper for instance.

2. Choose your lighting combustible

To light the fire, you can use different materials such as :

  • Kindling (preferably tender wood , such as cedar or pin), small twigs

  • Shavings

  • Birch bark

  • Newspaper

We advise against chemical materials (alcool, etc), shiny or coloured paper which often contains polluting materials

3. Laying these combustibles in your appliance

There are different ways, but it is most often advised to :

  • Light the fire next to the airflow

  • Use lots of slightly crumpled newspaper

  • Place the paper over the kindling, so it gets the oxygen first

  • Place the logs behind the lighting device or to add them once the fire is lit

  • Leave some space between the logs if you want a quick blaze, or huddle them together if you want a longer lasting fire.

4. Watch and maintain your fire

Once the fire is burning normally, turn the airflow valve on to "normal", don't close it.

For ecological reasons, it is best not to put logs on one after the other, but to fill the appliance at once if the fire is threatening to burn out.

Nevertheless, avoid over filling the appliance.

Grey smoke means a sound combustion. But black smoke is a bad sign, this colour means waste is flowing back. This waste could soil your chimney and glass. This problem will occur if you use bad quality wood.
